One of my favourite trails and stories was that of Bob Frost, a rear gunner in a downed Wellington MK3 bomber with a 4000lb bomb on board - destined for Essen. The early extracts from Joe Stirling’s interviews with his biographer Phyllida Scrivens, with which every chapter starts, convey a chilling reminder of Germany’s descent over four years from a reasonably tolerant respectable decentralised society into the intense nationalism, brutality and fascism of the Third Reich. But it was a weekly biographical interview feature, 'Meeting People', published in the Farnham Herald newspaper during the 1990s, that unwittingly prepared her for this debut full-length biography Escaping Hitler. The ending was sweet and drew a good conclusion to the story, promoting a sense of reflection for the reader. During an emotional 'foot-stepping' journey in September 2013 the author visited Gunter's birthplace, met with a school friend, discovered the apartment in Koblenz where he fled following Kristallnacht in 1938, drove the route of Gunter's walk through Europe and retraced the final steps of his parents prior to their deportation to a Nazi death camp in Poland during 1942.

How well I remember the many occasions when my husband and I would enter Peter Mancroft Church in Norwich, to see rows of people, many dressed in black, waiting for the special annual service to begin. The true story of a remarkable boy who walked across Europe to escape the dangers of Nazi Germany and went on to become Sheriff of Norwich. Joe Stirling’s life, from his childhood escape to Britain to life as a refugee in a strange country with a kindly family he had never met before; his education in unfamiliar schools and his ability to adapt to working as a professional in the politics of his adopted country; all have echoes with my own experience. By 1 April 1933 the party had already organized a boycott of Jewish businessmen and the liberal professions.

The emigration and exodus of German Jews and those with a different political orientation had enormous consequences in the political, cultural, scientific and economic fields, but was above all a humanitarian drama. Phyllida Scrivens brings the ninety years of Joe's remarkable life together in an accessible and entertaining narrative. There are heroes like Andree de Jongh, a young woman in her twenties who risked her life to smuggle men through occupied France, survived being sent to two concentration camps, and has been described by MI-9 as 'the greatest of our war-time agents'). Phyllida Scrivens tells this epic story in clear, precise prose, never missing a beat as the drama unfolds. Joe and I have many friends there as we have spoken about his life on two occasions, and last year I delivered my Lady Lord Mayor’s presentation.

Escaping Hitler brings new material to the English speaking audience and as such is a contribution to Holocaust history. m. Winston Churchill broadcast on the BBC, declaring that the following day would be ‘Victory in Europe Day’.After we had completed our usual book signing, Ilan and his wife Anne approached our table and Ilan spoke directly to Joe. However, from 25 November 1941, Germany collectively stripped all German Jews living outside the territory of their nationality, insofar as they had not yet been individually “ausgebürgert”. There's also Australian Ralph Churches who orchestrated the mass escape of 100 POWs from Slovenia - the largest successful Allied escape of the entire war. There was no room for anyone with different ideas; from the very beginning, opponents of the regime were intimidated, persecuted and imprisoned in concentration camps.People who never asked for the plaudits or glory, they simply thought they were doing what was right. In the end the situation for those who remained behind was even more dramatic: because of all the formalities, the lack of international cooperation, and ultimately the war itself, many German Jews were not able to reach a safe place. During this period, Hitler was still surrounded by his personal staff, from cleaners and cooks to his personal telephone operator, his stenographers and secretaries, his guards, his chosen ministers with, in some cases, their families and a range of military officers including a number of his senior generals. Includes some early SAS operations and finishes with a cracking yarn about the largest POW escape, with the leader of the escapee's son intow as he retraces their steps.
