It was fixed to the headphone, and a failure at this crucial junction would likely be the end of your headphones. What I didn’t like about the design was that the earcups swivel only to adjust to your head shape and not the full 90 degrees that would allow you to lay them flat on a table. If you’re looking for something a lot cheaper and you don’t mind making a few sacrifices then the Audio-Technica ATH-M20xBT are a great alternative. The headphones are light on features, including high-end Bluetooth codec support for Android, but if you primarily listen to music on an Apple device (or use a wired audio cable), they're sure to please. Advanced codecs such as aptX, aptX HD, and LDAC are not supported for enabling the best audio quality over Bluetooth.

Wireless, portable design offers the identical sound quality as the wired ATH-M20x professional studio headphones. Another budget pair of cans that do have active noise cancellation are Skullcandy Hesh - they’re not the best-looking pair in the world but they do give you a lot for your money including plenty of battery life and Tile tracking technology built in. The ATH-M20xBT might not quite meet the standards of the company's more upmarket models, but it is well tuned and delivers a pleasing sound. Importantly, if there’s deep bass in your track, you can hear all of it, just not to an exaggerated extent. You can also toggle a low-latency mode (helpful for playing games or watching videos) by pressing this button three times; a vocal prompt tells you the current active mode. That is incredibly impressive and despite the ATH-M20xBT not having ANC to drain the battery further, it gives you enough juice for about a week between charges.

The headphones themselves are made largely of plastic and other inexpensive materials, but that means they’re also insanely light—a mercy for portable audio products. Echoing their pricier siblings, the Audio Technica M50xBT2 over-ear headphones have a stripped-back and functional design with a matte black plastic build. Almost every headphone we test is checked by us: In addition to determining the frequency response, the heart of our measurements, we also evaluate the effects of noise that penetrates from the outside to the inside. It takes a short amount of time to get used to using physical buttons on the back of your headphones, but it’s equally possible that you’ll just end up using your music player’s controls on your phone. That means low-end sounds from, say, a timpani or a huge kick drum, come through clearly without any amount of over-emphasis. If you were looking for a set of headphones you likely wouldn’t have to replace for many years, this is a great candidate. That could be off-putting to some but given the clarity of the tuning straight out the box, I wouldn’t say that’s a dealbreaker. Google Assistant was the more reliable voice assistant and picked up commands accurately, though there was noticeable lag when firing up the feature.

Their main characteristics are closed-back construction, neutral sound and a rather unspectacular design. He makes music as well as enjoying it, is alarmingly wedded to the notion that Led Zeppelin remains the highest point of rock'n'roll yet attained, though remains willing to assess modern pretenders. The lack of any EQ options also means you must stick with the default sound signature, though as we explain below, it's excellent. Tuned to mirror the audio profile of our wired studio monitor headphones, the ATH-M20xBT ensures a consistent sonic signature wherever you are.

magazine, and before that of the erstwhile Audiophile magazine and of Electronics Today International. He currently focuses on audio, reviewing the most coveted headphones in the market for both Tom’s Guide and Laptop Magazine. The earcups could do with being a bit plusher, however – they’re a little too firm and can get uncomfortable during extended listening sessions. It’s a very polished and well-thought-out design that doesn’t get too ambitious but gets the basics very right. Audio Technica concentrated all their efforts on not only adding Bluetooth but on making clever refinements in areas that made a great headphone even better.

So to cater more to the way people rather than the way music is produced creates a better product in my mind.
