The circuit is simplicity itself. Use of the PCB naturally makes it extremely easy to assemble, and this project may be combined with the RIAA (phono) preamp shown in Project 06 and the preamp power supply (Project 05) for a complete high fidelity preamplifier.

Cantaloupe Island: An ARP Odyssey synth without any reverb or effects was the first instrument through the speakers. Cleaner, more defined—and dare I say with deeper bass—and texture that somehow seemed to make my subwoofer better get along with my speakers and room. Preamps come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some models are built-in, and many modern turntables do have a phono stage. Note: If first stage gain is set to 0dB as described below, then R1 (L+R) should be replaced with a 100Ω resistor, and R2 (L+R) omitted (the tape in and out connections are [almost] straight through). New Tubes: Whether you want to buy brand new or NOS, tube rolling is definitely the way to go if you want to fine tune to your specific tastes your system’s synergy.

In both movements, I admired the Pre Box RS2’s portrayal of Say’s instrument (a Steinway, judging from his YouTube video) -- immensely powerful, fast and brilliant in the upper registers, warm and authoritative in the lower registers. Provided you keep it away from other mains-powered products and power cables, this phono stage will prove suitably quiet and hum-free. Features are basic but it's clear that Moon has focused on the bit that counts – sound quality. Engaging the subsonic filter (also available via front panel pushbutton produces less low frequency rumble, but it also takes from a lot of the energy in the music resulting in an emotionally “flat” sound. Pro-Ject lists the filter as 20Hz with a slope of 18dB/octave however, the “20Hz” part confuses me because the filter doesn’t sound like it starts to drop at 20Hz. In fact, it sounds like it drops off at around 30-35Hz.

The Pre Box RS2 Digital has an I 2S-capable HDMI input specifically intended for use with the CD Box RS2T. Pro-Ject describes I 2S as “the perfect digital interconnect and ... the ideal solution to bypass the limitations that inherently come with other forms of digital audio connections.” For music lovers who still spin shiny discs, the Pre Box RS2 Digital and CD Box RS2T form a compelling combination. However, it is placed under more stress than a moving magnet preamp and also provides a much lower output of only 0.5 millivolts. It has fewer coil windings and a much higher price tag. Due to the low output, especially when it comes to bass frequencies, moving coil preamps require a minimum of ten times more preamp gain compared to the moving magnet variety. According to the manufacturer Pro-Ject, the new Phono Box RS2 is their most sophisticated phono preamplifier to date. Most new models of amps and receivers don’t come with a built-in phono preamp, but they may have a label that says phono anyway. The audio world knows of Pro-Ject Audio Systems as a major brand of turntables, but this Vienna-based company also makes an extensive line of electronics that lately have been winning all kinds of awards. For the past three years, Pro-Ject has received awards for its turntables and its electronic components from the Expert Imaging and Sound Association (EISA).

Radar Love«: Vinyl passion over radio waves – is that even possible? Yes it is! The Cambridge Audio Alva TT can also send its signals via Bluetooth as an alternative to the phono cable. At best an emergency solution? Quite the contrary!

The Dark Side Of The Moon

In “What a Wonderful World,” Batiste’s pedaled ostinato piano accompaniment didn’t sound as rich through the C658 as through the Pre Box RS2, and decays were less pronounced. His right-hand improvising between verses was comparably crisp and articulate, but a litter harder, through the NAD. Batiste’s sibilants and breaths were slightly more pronounced through the NAD. Once again, switching on Dirac Live room correction opened up the sound; decays were longer, providing a better sense of the reverberant recording venue. It did. The first movement of Beethoven’s Fifth sounded a little denser through the NAD C658 (with Dirac Live disabled) than through the Pro-Ject, and without as much harmonic richness. String textures were less transparent. Brass instruments had similar bite, but their tone wasn’t as burnished. The sense of space was slightly dryer -- the warm glow of the Musikvereinssaal wasn’t as obvious through the NAD as through the Pre Box S2 Digital. (Note: Roon was resampling this file to 24/176.4 PCM -- the C658 doesn’t support DSD.) The Phono Signature on its own sounds refined and smooth with plenty of bite when required, but adding the updated PSX-R2 power supply takes sound quality to another plane altogether. The scale is even bigger, bass gains more authority, and the precise positions of the performers and instruments in the beautifully layered sound stage are laid bare. The insightful delivery squeezes the very last drop of emotion from a recording. As Herbie’s Fender Rhodes e-piano entered, the wider soundstage kind of tossed the piano around the room as it oscillated between both channels. As Herbie’s ARP PE-IV String Ensemble faded in, the value having a slight increase in depth became clear: the sound was larger and a little more expansive. One downside: the S2’s improved detail retrievel revealed the audible distortion produced by the Debut Carbon’s rather short 8.6” tonearm.
