About this deal

The carafe is glass instead of plastic like other low-cost cold brew makers, which makes it sleek and easy to clean. And unfortunately it won’t be ready to drink in minutes, rather you’ll need to leave it steep overnight or for at least eight hours – either in the fridge or just at room temperature.

There are a few different parts to this brewing system (a carafe, stopper, brewing container, and filters), but it's still easy to use. Just keep adding until the water level reaches the top “band” where the handle attaches to the carafe. We looked at both cold-brew coffee makers and iced-coffee machines for this highly caffeinated round up. The Aeropress can also make hot drinks in a similar way, and has a cult following with caffeine nerds.

Perhaps the most crucial factor when picking a cold brew coffee maker: you should love the taste of the coffee it produces. While this machine makes hot brews too, the cold function works differently, extracting a deeper flavour.

If you're making a cocktail [with cold brew], you don't want an already diluted coffee, because then your cocktail will be diluted. The paper filter and the small reusable felt filter between the brewing container and the carafe ensured that no grounds escaped into the carafe during testing. As well as standard latte flavour, there’s also hazelnut, caramel and chocolate latte blends to try. Fill it with ground coffee and tap water – the instructions will tell you the ratio – and then stir well to ensure all the coffee is well soaked. Slowly pour water into the carafe until full and refrigerate for approximately 8 -12 hours for the cold brew to complete.

If you’re looking at making a few servings of cold brew – maybe you have a busy house, or one cup just doesn’t quite hit the spot – then this Hario jug could be the answer. You can also do this again half-way through the brew as an added insurance for a strong brew and even extraction. Our testing found that both metal and stainless steel filters allowed some grounds to escape, while mesh filters resulted in weak coffee.
