When I look at some of his drawings, people are looking up for salvation, just before they’re being shot. It’s a journey McCullin first made at the age of five, when he was evacuated in 1940 from his home in Finsbury Park, north London.Wherever they are shot, McCullin’s landscapes – handsomely reproduced on these pages – share an inky dark magnificence, and an unsettling sense of menace.
