About this deal

I have read about some inconsistent quality control on the Jinhao line but I decided to take a chance and worse case I could break out all that nib tuning and smoothing supplies I have bought over time and been scared to destroy any nibs. I don’t think the pen was designed to be posted, and like the x450, posting the x750 makes it top-heavy. The site offers both the X750 Shimmering Sands, aptly renamed Starry Nights, and the Baoer Eight Horses along with a good selection of other models from Jinhao.

The balance is good as long as you don't post the cap but if you do, most of the weight will be shifted to the top which makes it very awkward to hold. If it gets scratched, broken, or lost you’re only out a few dollars rather than a larger chunk of change. A long time ago, back in November of 2011, I posted a very short snippet about a new fountain pen that I acquired. Both barrel and cap are made from a glossy black lacquer overlay onto probably a brass base with chrome plated fittings. The degree of line variation will give any handwriting an appealing look and can improve legibility. As with any fountain pen, if the pen is not used regularly the ink will dry out and you may have to get the ink flowing again. The cap features a thick band of silver trim which is real metal and is embossed with "Jinhao" on one side and "X750" on another, with a tribal-like design in between.

Following this, I asked on the subreddit r/fountainpens why the fountain pen community was so divided on Jinhaos. The ends of the barrel and the cap are dome-shaped and less pointy than the x450, so I think it looks a bit more low-key. They are not my favorite pens for use at home but I often carry one because I wouldn't mourn the loss since they can be so easily and inexpensively replaced. The best indicator that the Eight Horses medium nib qualifies for a recommendation is that it has seen regular use in my journal. It also takes some time for you, the pen user, to get used to your new pen and adapt your writing style to the pen.

It took me this long to review the pen because I've been using it for several weeks with multiple inks. But the nib is smooth and I found that if you stick it in a Noodler's Ahab it makes for a very wet, smooth writing nib. I’ve begun to actually like this pen whereas before it was simply one I purchased because it was cheap and I liked the chessboard-like pattern. As the pen “breaks in” with use the ink will flush any factory oils and residue from the pen, consequently the ink will flow more consistently and writing will become smoother. I think part of the problem with it when it was in my rotation last was I didn’t use it as often so the ink would dry up in the feed resulting in hard starts.
