Description

These plants grow and spread in gardens, fields, woods, roadsides, ditches, sandbanks, pastures – just so long as the soil is not acidic. One might think that Baby’s Breath is not as widely available as popular plants, both perennials and annuals, but one would be wrong.

Perennial Babys Breath can be planted at any time of year provided the soil is warm enough (over 15°C), but the best time to plant roots and plants is early spring, giving them enough time to develop roots and establish before flowering in summer. Soil Sow seeds thinly, 9 inches (23 cm.) apart once any chance of frost is over. Spread 1/4 inch (6 mm.) of fine soil over the seeds and firm it. Water the bed and keep it lightly moist.Flowers: Baby’s Breath flowers are small and usually white or pale pink, forming clusters that create a light, airy effect. Watering: Baby’s Breath prefers well-draining soil, so be careful not to overwater. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Water deeply but infrequently to encourage the development of a strong root system.

People fell in love with the dainty, airy blooms and florists saw its potential as a versatile cut flower. It’s a staple in every flower shop, and is used in bouquets for every occasion, from weddings to funerals. Baby’s Breath has been used to symbolise hope, rebirth and new beginnings, and is given in wedding bouquets and at baby showers as a blessing, sharing well wishes and good fortune for the years ahead. Plant them in chalky, sandy, or gravelly soil that is, preferably, Slightly Alkaline (but not at all on the acidic side). However, if you do notice leafhopper damage and want to catch them before they cause more damage, you can try applying BotaniGard Maxx to rid the garden of these pests as well. SlugsIf ‘plant surgery’ is the route you take, apply Neem Oil on and around the parts of the plant that were cut, and sterilise your secateurs with a proprietary disinfectant or alcohol solution.
