Update: Happy to say Certain Dark Things, which has been out of print for a while now, will come out in a new edition courtesy of Tor in 2021. A total side note but reading this book gave me a lot of the vibes I got when I first read one of my favourite books, Lost Souls by Poppy Z. And surprisingly, each of the three books I read were completely different (other than those similarities I just pointed out). Certain Dark Things is the story of Domingo, a street kid who’s been surviving by digging through the trash and doing odd jobs to stay alive. Domingo tossed a bottle into a plastic bag, then paused to observe the patrons eating at a restaurant.

With only her faithful dog Cualli and a young street boy Domingo, Atl must try to find a way out of the country while pursued by both Necros and human gangs who refuse to tolerate any vampires on their turf. This novel contains many species of vampires, some gorgeous, some terrifying, and each with their own vivid personality. The interesting aspect of this vampire novel is that it doesn’t offer the same old tired tropes we know from all those European vampire stories we know. Also, a sidenote: It wasn’t until I was several chapters into the book that I remembered I played a Mexican vigilante detective vampire in the last Vampire: The Masquerade game I played in, so, like, bonus I guess? In Certain Dark Things , different types of vampires inspired by various world mythologies are depicted as competing subspecies. The other main character Domingo, human, is touchingly portrayed along with his complicated relationship with Atl. She has to learn where to place her trust, and though the voice of her sister is telling her that a human is not someone she can trust, Atl see’s something in Domingo that she understands.

Whether you love noir, vampires, or just the lushness of Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s writing, you’ll definitely want to check out Certain Dark Things . It’s from here the story starts to run at break neck speed, evolvling into Moreno-Garcia’s dubbing of ‘neon noir’. Silvia Moreno-Garcia pulls zero punches, bares all the fangs, and goes for every throat in the room with Certain Dark Things . Her descriptions are vivid so whether the characters were in a beautiful old mansion, a festive plaza, an outdoor bar, or a subway tunnel, I felt like I was there. The quickest to grow in power are the Necros, a Central European subspecies of vampire that most closely resemble those depicted in classic literature.Silvia Moreno-Garcia carves out the heart of Mexico City, and then eats it, in this riveting noir-punk reinvention of vampire lore. But Moreno-Garcia puts a fresh spin on this backdrop by creating a world where human gangs and vampire gangs of different species are bitter rivals in the fight to control the drugs—and thus the wealth and the power—that flow through Mexico. And she was a beauty, with that black hair and the dark eyes and the way she stood, so damn graceful. Author: Moreno-Garcia, Silvia Thriller / suspense Published on 1 September 2022 by Quercus Publishing (Jo Fletcher Books) in the United Kingdom. Domingo is a street kid looking for his next meal when he finds Atl, a beautiful and mysterious girl who invites him back to her place… only Domingo might in fact be her meal.
