About this deal

Having the words of various carols within this book meant that I slowed down to really read the words.

The words of the Daily Office are drawn from a variety of sources, such as St Patrick’s Breastplate, Teresa’s Bookmark, Columba’s Blessing, etc – and from Psalm 27 for Morning Prayer, Psalm 90 for Midday Prayer and Psalm 130 for Evening Prayer. I love the rhythm of this liturgy, the way the prayers work deep into your heart and mind (as you use them more and more), going with you throughout your day, and bringing you back again. These liturgies reflect the importance to us of the inspiration and example of the Celtic, and in particular the Northumbrian, saints.Morning, Midday and Evening Prayer and Complies with Meditations for the day and four years of Daily Readings from Books 1 and 2.

From the fall of Rome to the rise of Charlemagne – the 'dark ages' – learning, scholarship and culture disappeared from the European continent. Each day there is also a passage of Scripture to read, and Claire finishes each devotion with a prayer. Along the way we encounter a choir of diverse voices sharing their favourite carols, poems and prayers, illustrated throughout with original colour artwork. The Daily Office – Morning, Midday and Evening Prayer – is at the core of the life of the Northumbria Community. The author's engaging facing-page commentary explores how faithful Christians and spiritual seekers use the writings of this lively tradition as ways of embodying and living the gospel. This may seem unfamiliar to the many who are used only to modern language, but it is a deliberate attempt to highlight the contemporary relevance of the treasure of prayer from long ago. It is also rooted in poets, prophets and the theology and devotional writing of the black theologian and mentor to Martin Luther King Jr.

Both volumes of Celtic Daily Prayer are a complex mixture of writing original to Northumbria Community, along with some third party and out-of-copyright material, and so we thought it would help to offer some guidelines to simplify the process of seeking permission to use the material they contain. Topics include reaching adulthood/mid-life/old-age; renewal of a marriage; the summer solstice; living with pain; blessing a garden; Christmas preparation; after an argument; scattering ashes; studying; peace; the ‘father wound’; loyalty and sleep, among many, many others. The Northumbria Community is a diverse, worldwide, Christian Community, committed to a new way for living. The Northumbria Community also offers these daily prayer services and prayers on a CD by the same title, though I found the CD less appealing or helpful than the book.
