But the fine line was a difficult one to travel – he let his desperation fuel his adrenalin – to think would mean he would collapse. Sampson is certain his friend has been framed, and Alex's investigation turns up evidence overlooked-or concealed-by the military authorities. It's more gritty and the storyline more believable although I felt that you had to suspend belief in the end bit. It was good, but the cliffhanger of an ending, as I said at the time, so reeked of promotion for this one that I almost vowed on principle not to read the follow-up. As his window for solving both crimes narrows, Alex makes a desperate decision that goes against everything he believes-one that may alter the fate of the entire country.

C., what they discover is shocking: a stunningly organized gang of lethal teenagers headed by a powerful, diabolical man-the African warlord known as the Tiger. But function he must if he has even the slightest chance of catching the diabolical killer and find his precious Nana Mama and the rest of his children alive. I was giving up on the Cross series because I felt the writing was going downhill as the series progressed and I was not enjoying them as I did the earlier ones.

You can state your good intentions, you can imagine the life you want, but you can’t negotiate with Him. So I took a longer-than normal break between books, and much to my chagrin, I really enjoyed this book. So to allow you to read the book you have to start at the very last page and read the right hand page before the left hand page. His ex-fiancee, Christine Johnson, comes back into his life-and not for the reasons he might have hoped .Alex Cross is simply superb, as always, and the pain he feels comes right through the pages of the book. Patterson really surprised me by entering enemy territory with Marcus Sunday and his true-crime book The Perfect Criminal hogging the limelight in the introductory chapters.

Behind all the noise and the numbers, we shouldn't forget that no one gets this big without amazing natural storytelling talent - which is what Jim has, in spades. Patterson boils a scene down to the single, telling detail, the element that defines a character or moves a plot along. Always the same story: his poor 90-something year old grandma, his children, and current partner all in the hands of various madmen and it's that same story over and over. This wouldn't particularly bother me if it didn't come along with all the other gimmicks that the author uses to create a false sense of tension. Cross's family-his loving wife Bree, the wise and lively Nana Mama, and his precious children-have been ripped away. To get the biggest bang for your bucks, then, I suggest reading Cross Your Heart before tackling this one. Jack and Jill are out to get the rich and famous, and they will stop at nothing until their fiendish plan is carried out.
