We’re big Billingham fans and have high hopes for the series, so let’s hope the Beeb can do it justice. The darkness comes from very real human emotions which are wrought to life stunningly by MyAnna Buring. While an investigation into a murdered teenager might not exactly be cause for celebration – on the surface of things – Weeks should be happy.

I’m not at all swayed by cover blurbs – after all, how many “BEST TEN BOOKS OF THE YEAR” can there be? It's very easy to piece the crime together based on what information you get, which is pretty hilarious when you realize the lengths Twattingham's gone to by withholding information and goals all throughout the book. Ultimately, though, this is a gritty and realistic crime drama, certainly in keeping with Billingham's normal high standards. Billingham says: "We were working on the script for the third film (three TV episodes), all just moving ahead quite happily and unbeknown to us a new head of drama was coming in and she did not want to recommission anything her predecessor had done. After having written several very successful novels centred on the cynical, yet also empathetic, Detective Inspector Tom Thorne, Mark Billingham introduced a new protagonist for this book. A growing number of suicides start looking like murder in Billingham’s absorbing 11th novel featuring Det. Another sweltering month in Charlotte, another boatload of mysteries past and present for overworked, overstressed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. Brooks places the epicenter of the Bigfoot war in a high-tech hideaway populated by the kind of people you might find in a Jurassic Park franchise: the schmo who doesn’t know how to do much of anything but tries anyway, the well-intentioned bleeding heart, the know-it-all intellectual who turns out to know the wrong things, the immigrant with a tough backstory and an instinct for survival.

Brooks presents a case for making room for Bigfoot in the world while peppering his narrative with timely social criticism about bad behavior on the human side of the conflict: The explosion of Rainier might have been better forecast had the president not slashed the budget of the U. Relations have been cool between Paul and Helen ever since he found out about the fling she had at a particularly inopportune time. Maybe, but the sasquatches whom the volcano displaced contributed to the statistics, too, if only out of self-defense. As more and more information comes to light, the story becomes more rounded and you get to follow the main characters as they set about life and death matters. It turns out that for years, she and her school friend were sexually abused by a friend of her father, a local councillor. There were a couple of points where I got characters mixed up with each other, but this didn't happen all that often. The use of language with all the characters seems quite realistic and helps keep the groups distinct from each other.
