He sneaks out of his aunt's house, goes home and finds his parents and sister dead, horribly and gruesomely murdered. All the characters were well done and quite relatable, it felt they had depth and room for development. Lord Loss follows Grubbs Grady, a teenage boy who stumbles upon the remains of his family who have been brutally murdered by demonic beings. However, Kernel saw that their struggle seemed to be a weak facade and believes that Bec has made an alliance with Lord Loss.

And I don't think I'd let a child under a mature for his/her age 12 (and that's being generous) read this book. Then Grubbs realizes that Lord Loss is feeding on his despair and then decides to play with an aloof attitude.I remember rating a book low because the characters couldn't put together complete phrases while in intimate moments; I think I even used the term "caveman". This first book had elements of mystery and suspense as the hero begins to suspect his uncle suffers from an ancient curse, a curse that may have led to tragedy for his family.

He moved to Limerick in Ireland with his parents and younger brother when he was six, and has lived there ever since. Despite his cruel nature, Lord Loss is not entirely evil; by the standards of the Demonata he could even be considered a "good guy". The middle section was a little uneventful but it didn't impact the rest of the book negatively as it still moved quickly.

Due to the Crux being set up like a chess board, with the white zones being the Demonata's universe and the black zones being the Old Creature's universe, Lord Loss's obsession with chess prepared him for his destiny of becoming the last Demon Master. It’s been over twelve years since I last read this book, coming back to it, I’m filled with so much nostalgia. While confronting Lord Loss, Dervish is constantly distracted from his chess match as Grubbs is unable to fight off the two familiars. The book repeats the formula of The Saga of Darren Shan and will no doubt be loved by Shan's many fans.
