About this deal

A memoir exploring Stott’s childhood in the Exclusive Brethren, a very strict Christian sect that became a cult in the ’60s and was rocked by a sex scandal in the ’70s. An interesting read about Rebecca Stott, her father, and building a life after leaving the Exclusive Brethren. Yet Rebecca’s father, Roger Stott, a high-ranking Brethren minister, was a man of contradictions: he preached that the Brethren should shun the outside world, yet he kept a radio in the trunk of his car and hid copies of Yeats and Shakespeare behind the Brethren ministries. What's interesting to me is this author's discovery that her great-great-grandfather, in all likelihood, joined the Brethren simply to avoid paying church taxes to the Anglican Church in Scotland in the mid-1800s. According to the theology of The Exclusive Brethren, the rest of the world was operated by Satan, who controlled everyone in the outside world.

It echoes the biblical picture of Jacob, who — following his nocturnal wrestling bout with God — limps, wounded, towards the rising sun. He was such a religious fundamentalist that he once summoned the family and made them watch as he took out a sharp knife and cut the D for Darwin section out of their new Children’s Encyclopaedia.Whether you have an interest in the Exclusive Brethren or just cults in general this is a fascinating look at the effects of living in what was essentially a doomsday cult. In The Days of Rain describes how an already tight grip on loyalty became squeezed even harder, as a new American Brethren leader, “Big Jim” Taylor Junior, exerted a stranglehold. EXCLUSIVEKate is reunited with her three children for the first time in two weeks after leaving hospital.

A father-daughter story as well as a memoir of growing up in a closed-off community and then finding a way out of it, this is an inspiring and beautiful account of the bonds of family Julia Samton, MD, a psychiatrist at NYC's Manhattan Neuropsychiatric who offers light therapy in her practice, takes that advice a step further. Television, movies, music, and any books apart from the bible and the brethren ministries are banned. Many places in the tropics see high levels of rainfall, and therefore a high number of days with some rain. A father-daughter story that tells of the the author's experience growing up in the Exclusive Brethren, a fundamentalist, separatist Christian cult, from the author of the national bestseller Ghostwalk. He was a Shakespearian actor, a gambling addict, a former prisoner, and a high-ranking member of a religious cult. In the Days of Rain is Rebecca Stott’s attempt to make sense of her childhood in the Exclusive Brethren, to understand her father’s role in the cult and in the breaking apart of her family, and to come to be at peace with her relationship with a larger-than-life figure whose faults were matched by a passion for life, a thirst for knowledge, and a love of literature and beauty. Both are highly intelligent and look to books to open their minds and discover the outside world the cult told them was controlled by Satan and to be tempted was to be left behind when the rapture arrived. Yet, each time he reached a certain point, he became tangled in a thicket of painful memories and could not go on. When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.
