When you graduate, you’re fully qualified in your chosen area, knowledgeable across the range of engineering disciplines, and able to apply new technologies in novel situations, giving you an advantage over engineering graduates from other more narrowly focused courses. Prospects are typically excellent, with 99% of respondents to the Graduate Outcomes survey reporting that they are in employment or further study 15 months after graduation.¹
Teaching is provided through a mixture of lectures, practicals, projects and supervisions, and in Year 1 you can typically expect around 22 hours of teaching each week. You’re assessed each year through coursework and written exams. David gained maximum A-Level grades in Maths, Further Maths and Physics then achieved a first-class degree in Physics from the University of Oxford in 2002. During his A-levels he received a congratulatory letter for excellent work in his Pure 3 Maths examination. While at Oxford he gained a distinction in the Preliminary Examination (top 15% of candidates) and was placed high in the first class in his finals. Since leaving Oxford he attended the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) and currently works as a professional musician. Whilst this works on one level, it may lead to some anomalies. For example, Music courses and Music Technology courses can have exactly the same code despite being very different programmes with quite distinct educational and career outcomes.

In Part IIB, further specialisation is possible and you select eight papers from around 80 options which vary each year. These papers benefit from the Department’s research and are taught by experts in the particular field. As a result, you graduate with a Masters-level appreciation of theory and practice in your chosen area. The average scores of all applicants and successful offer holders differ from year to year, however it is a good idea to use the average scores from previous years to gauge what you should be aiming for in the ENGAA. The average scores from each section of the ENGAA in 2021 are listed in the table below.
Top tip: There aren’t a huge number of past papers available for the ENGAA as it is a relatively new admissions test, so if you find yourself needing more papers to practise, try using PAT past papers as well. The PAT (Physics Aptitude Test) is used by Oxford to assess applicants for Engineering among other Physics-based courses, and covers many of the same topics as the ENGAA. However, just note that the time conditions are not the same for both tests and that you should not sit the PAT to prepare for this element of the ENGAA, but rather for the content and style of questions. 4. Welcome to the most popular ENGAA past paper resource for Oxbridge applicants! Below you will find ENGAA question and answer documents for all ENGAA past papers. Similarly to many other pre-interview assessments at Cambridge, the ENGAA is graded on a scale from 1.0 to 9.0, where the average candidate is expected to score a 4.0. There is no set score necessary to be invited for interview as it varies from college to college, and the distribution of ENGAA scores may vary from year to year. All applicants for Engineering (H100) or Chemical Engineering via Engineering (H810) are required to sit the ENGAA. If you are a mature student applying to a mature college you may be invited to sit an at-interview written assessment instead of the ENGAA. In addition to the ENGAA, some colleges require applicants to sit an additional college-set written assessment at interview. Currently, these colleges are only Trinity 🔗, however the college you are applying to will let you know if this is the case.
