Opening with a hefty hit of lavender and anise – it smells extremely overpowering at first and a little like soapy licorice. To be completely honest, we weren’t hooked at first sniff – but stay with it as this is a complex fragrance that really evolves on the skin.
Now we have a major trend, with major pillar fragrances such as 2019 YSL Libre (the name inspired by the little known former vintage called Eau Libre, which fascinatingly launched as a shared fragrance) and Guerlain's Mon Guerlain (2017) which was so successful - or designed so from the start - that it already boasts four variations of the original Eau de Parfum formula: the Eau de Toilette, the Eau de Parfum Intense, Mon Guerlain Florale and Mon Guerlain Bloom of Rose, plus a couple of limited editions. Wow! Caron's Pour un Homme(1934) gave lavender a distinctly fluffy, vanillic underpinning, like silk boxers under a suit, for men to be sure, as claimed by the name, but suitable for women too. Although not officially aimed at women, yet it's the continuing cult of this particular scent, well into the 2000s, with several online critics praising it profusely, which prompted the popularity of the combination of lavender with vanilla and amber or musk, to appeal to women. No wonder Mon Guerlain has such a successful course, as it was designed to be an almost identical relaunch of the already well received Mon Exclusif, a fragrance originally meant to become your very own by personalizing the bottle and the name label, but which became so very own to enough women that the company decided to sell it to all women, rendering it less...exclusive in the process.Nowadays, it is the vanillic and licorice nuanced lavenders which are featured in any product that aims to appeal to women or women buying for babies and children. To wit, most children's products for the bath and body which claim "relaxing lavender" are mostly featuring a blend of musk with vanilla and abstract notes of extraterrestrial flowers grown on the moon; lily of the valley, jasmine and delicate, unreal roses. And this explains the divide that lavender produces; some people love the medicinal properties they have come to know from real lavender, some people abhor them, confused by the artificial construct that is advertised as "lavender" but really isn't. There's a kind of vibe shift taking place in perfumery right now. As the seasons shift and we fully transition into autumn, so do our scents. Often, we swap out the floaty, floral fragrances of summer in favour of deeper, moodier notes to pair with the darker, cosier months. The scent itself varies considerably depending on the wood used, where the tree was grown and whether the tree itself was cultivated or naturally infected. The fragrance is – unsurprisingly – described as warm and woody with a slight hint of damp rot, while some varieties are smoky and sweet. It can be very potent so not one for the faint-hearted.
