About this deal

A German prisoner of war once said to me: “Luftwaffe come, you run; RAF come, we run; Yankee come, we all run!” Then, it drove on and took Naples. Used to fighting in the desert, the division had to adjust to the confined Italian roads.

The Regiment fought at Wilhelmstahl during the Seven Years War (1756-63). It was later involved in the War of American Independence (1775-8) and in St Lucia in 1778. Brigade was posted to Cyprus and given the status of a Corps and given unlimited powers to hire local labour to build a hospital to serve the wounded, after the fall of Crete. POWs in the three days of fighting, proving beyond doubt their usefulness on a modern battlefield. Captain A monument to commemorate the 7th Armoured was erected at Brandon in Thetford Forest where the division trained prior to D-day. [80] Notable personnel [ edit ]

Cruiser tanks were intended to be faster moving and more heavily armoured than a light tank. They were equipped with a machine gun and a gun that was effective against other tanks. Their primary role was to engage and destroy opposing armoured forces. The main weapon was a 2-pounder anti-tank gun, which was only supplied with armour-piercing rounds. This meant cruiser tanks were ineffective against entrenched infantry or for suppressing hostile artillery. [13] [19] I have his War Office ID card for Mechanical Transport Drivers (Army Form A 2038) valid from 22/5/40 to 13/11/41 with his name and no: 6852157 (description) RFN B605 2nd Q.V.R. (K.R.R.C.). The ‘2nd Q.V.R.’ is crossed through and replaced by ‘B22 8th’ and something that I cannot quite decipher. His Soldier’s Service Book mentions a Major Watson. His Release Certificate and testimonial is signed by a Major Cox at the No 4 Military Dispersal Unit and dated 4 Dec 1945. On 4 April 1939, the Royal Armoured Corps was formed to command all mechanised cavalry and the battalions of the Royal Tank Corps. The latter was renamed the Royal Tank Regiment and its nomenclature colloquially changed; each unit dropped the word battalion from their names, although this was not officially adopted until September 1945. Over centuries in times of war men of all faiths have turned to God before and during battle. In Medieval times Monks and other clergy would accompany the armies to hear confession before a soldier took to the field and to administer whatever help they could afterwards, if only to ensure the dead were given a decent burial. In 1796 the Army Chaplains' Department was formed with solely Church of England chaplains, when a Royal Warrant was issued,

He was born in 1910, the year of the Great Comet. His date of birth was the 6th of June — the day of deliverance for Europe in those dark days of the Second World War. Curiously, he died in 1984 when that same Great Comet was sweeping in toward the sun upon its return. He died one night alone, except for a nurse spoon-feeding him with morphine, in hospital of a cancer that had been diagnosed by his GP as arthritis and, previously, as malingering! Cavalry Division, and recruiting started on the 20th May 1920, while the majority of surplus Yeomanry Regiments chose to convert to During 1942 the 7th Armoured Division was involved in the following battles and campaigns. London Division in Enfidaville woods. At one stage here in the woods, one of the infantry divisions, which shall be unnamed, withdrew through our positions, causing mayhem. We were running short of ammunition and asked them to help us carry it up to the guns. They hated being near our guns as we were prime targets for enemy aircraft and artillery. So they were unable to assist us.

In the desert in a quiet period at night, I often sat staring at the moon, trying to work out if it could be seen from home at the same time. I never did work it out. It was just a thought, a way of trying to communicate with home, a terrible feeling of loneliness. These primitive conditions didn’t seem funny at the time, but when we met at a reunion years afterwards they were the topic of conversation and jokes. We really laughed about “The Good/Bad Old Days”.

By 1944, a division was supposed to have 14,964 men, 126 guns, 366 tanks and around 4,000 vehicles.
