Retrieved 21 February 2010. Mad, bad and dangerous to know" has become Lord Byron's lasting epitaph Two hundred years before Khayyam’s summer of discontent, Leila is struggling to survive and keep her true love hidden from the Pasha who has “gifted” her with favored status in his harem. In the present day—and with the company of a descendant of Alexandre Dumas—Khayyam begins to connect allusions to an enigmatic 19th-century Muslim woman whose path may have intersected with Alexandre Dumas, Eugène Delacroix, and Lord Byron. I became slightly lost in adventurer jargon and terminology for parts of the book, not really understanding what all of the words meant and therefore not being able to envisage the scenes as I would have liked. However, the sheer breadth of Fiennes experiences here means that there is something for everyone--I enjoyed the section of mountain climbing towards the end finding myself close to suffering vertigo from the comfort of my living room! Mad, Bad & Dangerous to Know is led by Khayyam, a seventeen-year-old teen soon going on eighteen. She encompasses a range of identities; "living between spaces", as she puts it: French American; Indian American; Muslim American. In the book, her French, American and Muslim identities are most apparent, and Ahmed's own personal experiences shine through.

As Lord David Cecil remarks, she had long since concluded that Caroline deserved all her misfortunes. William Lamb refused to submit and regretted that his mother had conspired against his wife with Byron. Calling Byron treacherous, William Lamb was supportive of his wife to her death. [24] TL;DR: Focusing on revealing the story of a woman written out of history and led by an #ownvoices Muslim heroine, Mad, Bad & Dangerous' romantic plotline sometimes overshadows the actual women. However, it will appeal to readers who enjoy historical art mysteries, and fits perfectly into the rising genre of stories that bring the voices of forgotten women to light. One of the things I loved about this book is how it approaches history--Khayyam and Alexandre have discussions on Orientalism, which is. Just. *chef's kiss* Introducing teens to literary and historical theory. Amazing. I love it when books have smart discussions about history and the effects of colonialism on people of colour, but bringing in Edward Said has me absolutely deranged in the best of ways. But also--as a person of colour, and a student of history and English who focuses a lot on the knowledge of Western Europe, I could very much relate to Khayyam's pursuit of history and her conflicts around whose stories to tell, and the difficulties that come with the huge impact that Western Europe and exploitation of people of colour have on our society today. How so many stories of people of colour, of women, and of disabled people and queer people have simply never been

JSTOR 1316621. I'm going to be honest: I went into this knowing next to nothing about it, so imagine my delight when I realized it was about a French-American Muslim girl set in Paris on an art history sleuthing mission mixed with poetry and philosophy. Like, this hit the nail on the head for what I like, and honestly, I was hooked. As a Christian, I struggled in places knowing that Fiennes, despite his great earthly achievements, appears to have no personal assurance of salvation and no understanding of the path to eternal life.

Am J Primatol 2010, 72(10):877–886. 10.1002/ajp.20842 Although my feelings at points oscillated, I really enjoyed the ending. At the core of it, it's a YA story led by an #ownvoices Muslim heroine, investigating another historical Muslim woman whose story was neglected and rewritten and reinterpreted by men such as Byron to frame white men as the saviors. For readers who enjoy hearing tales of forgotten stories recently dredged out of the passing of time, and those who enjoy mysteries centered around history, this one could be a worthy addition to the TBR. No, not that kind of piracy. Byron’s rise to fame coincided with mass mechanised publishing. This meant that many people were able to read his poetry, but also that unscrupulous publishers were able easily to steal Byron’s work without his permission. 7. Byron was the inspiration for the first vampire novel Until now, we have found no evidence to support this hypothesis. Although loris venom can kill small prey, venom is not used to paralyse it, and we know of no instance of lorises caching prey [ 8]. Of hundreds of field hours and observations of prey capture events, lorises consume prey rapidly and effectively with powerful jaws and sharp teeth, and it does not seem that venom is required to carry this out. This does not rule out the possibility that they sequester secondary compounds from certain foods. Predators as target Youth and education [ edit ] Lady Caroline's mother, Henrietta, Countess of Bessborough, by Angelica Kauffman in 1793 The habit was embedded in the years of strife between the referendum vote for Brexit and its enactment after Boris Johnson’s landslide election victory.

An overarching criticism that I have of (auto)biographies is that they never contain enough photos. More please! Most enjoyable of all, however, is the essay on John B Yeats, an artist who struggled ever to finish his work, and who only painted those he liked, the act of creation being for him one of sympathy. His influence on his son’s poetry came to be profound; safely at a distance in the US, it was possible for him to write to William often, and fervently, about his work. But I found myself more moved and captivated by his love letters to Rosa Butt. Though he and Rosa, the daughter of Isaac Butt, the Irish politician and first leader of the Home Rule League, had known each other when they were young, they began their passionate correspondence only in old age, separated by the Atlantic, their creaking bones and John’s spoony hopelessness (this widower in exile was all longing and no action). Khayyam is a girl who exists in the liminal space between several identities. She's American, raised in Chicago by her professor parents, but spends her summers in Paris. Her mom is Indian American and Muslim, and her dad is French. She speaks multiple languages and proves to be both adaptable and self-conscious as she navigates multiple worlds. She's also obsessed with art history. Farage can now stroll around the secure zone of a Tory conference like a conqueror on occupied territory or, as many conference delegates would see it, a hero of the resistance post-liberation. Douglass, Paul (1 January 2004). Lady Caroline Lamb: A Biography. Palgrave Macmillan. p.238. ISBN 978-1-4039-6605-6.Then finally credit is due in his fund-raising missions. But admittedly half of them failed, and when they succeeded, he nearly killed himself. A thoughtful and compelling book about history and the people whose lives are invisible . . . Though romance adds an interesting personal (and modern day) element to Khayyam’s story, Ahmed’s writing shines first and foremost where she has written a complex mystery and social commentary about women in history.” As a small child, she was considered delicate and for her health spent much time in the country. She travelled with her mother and other family to Italy, where she made an agonizing recovery from an illness caused by worms that nearly ended her life. [3] After returning with her mother to England, she rejoined a lively menage of children who lived at Devonshire House and Roehampton, her cousins, the children of William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire: by his first marriage, to Lady Georgiana Spencer, three children, Lady Georgiana ("Little G"), Lady Harriet Cavendish ("Hary-o"), and Lord Hartington ("Hart", later the 6th Duke of Devonshire); and by his mistress and second wife, Lady Elizabeth Foster, two children, Augustus Clifford and Caroline St Jules, later wife of George Lamb. During childhood, she became particularly close to Lady Harriet, who was only three months older. [4] Her behaviour grew increasingly troublesome to her family, she experimented with sedatives like laudanum and had a special governess to control her. [3] Slow lorises are fauni-frugivores that consume a wide variety of animal prey and plant materials, including those that contain considerable amounts of secondary metabolites [ 25, 26]. They easily overcome relatively large prey including birds, bats, lizards and tarsiers; venom could be useful in subduing these animals. Many animals use de novo or acquired toxins to subdue prey, broadly classed in two types: excitatory and depressant [ 27]. Excitatory toxins induce sustained contraction paralysis, whereas depressant toxins induce a slow and flaccid paralysis. Short-tailed shrews use depressant toxins to immobilise prey, which they cache for later consumption [ 28]. Excitatory toxins are useful for predators that may need to release their prey, and should be less likely in an arboreal environment where immobilised prey may fall to the forest floor [ 29].
