These skills can help the expert form opinions as to when a document was written or signed, or whether two samples of writing were created with the same ink. While not all courts have explained their reasoning, those that do tend to draw a distinction between the practice of identifying similarities and differences in handwriting characteristics and the act of drawing a definitive conclusion about identity therefrom. These courts have concluded that while the science of comparing handwriting samples meets the Daubert or Frye standard, the science of identifying individuals based on those samples has not. Signature analysis: Your signature will speak about you more than you can believe. Your signature is the most genuine expression of personality. It reveals virtues, flaws, complexes, ambitions, feelings for inferiority or superiority, capacity for adaptation or tendencies to become lonely. There are many signature models that may help you recognize a few details. A common procedure used in the United Kingdom and all around the world involves letter by letter analysis. This supposedly gives the analyst an understanding of the writer’s letter shape formation. In practice however it only does that to a limited extent as the shape of the letter often varies depending on where it is placed within a word as well as what precedes or follows it. Moreover people do not usually think in separate letters. We have learned to hide our true feelings and therefore these physical signs alone they usually do not transmit enough. The voice and actions can be misleading and the spoken word can be manipulated in many ways. Is it possible to know the true feelings of others? If smaller labs can no longer support in-house experts due to a diminishing caseload, they can farm out work to private sector experts like Will and Mohammed. At the same time, larger federal labs, including the FBI Laboratory and the U.S. Army’s Defense Forensic Science Center, continue to maintain questioned document units. This is in part because their focus includes international terrorism, where handwritten documents are still a source of valuable intelligence, and in part because the United States is a big place. Nationwide, crimes involving handwriting still occur frequently enough that federal labs need to keep experts on staff. For example, two people may form their y’s similarly, but the letters will be a different size. Two other people may have writing of the exact same size, but one of them dots their I’s to the left, and the other to the right. This marks a profound shift in how we communicate, but for one group of experts it also raises an existential question. Forensic handwriting examiners authenticate handwritten notes and signatures — or reveal them to be fakes — by analyzing distinctive features in our writing. As people write less by hand, will handwriting examination become irrelevant? This commonly involves handwriting comparison, examination and identification in a legal context, usually involving the analysis of disputed documentation and signature examination by an expert who groups similarities and dissimilarities. Writing construction, proportion and shape are important elements of the analysis. This and wider aspects of authentication, fraud and disguise are uncovered and researched with verifiable methods and modern scientific equipment. However, analysis in this area is not an exact science. Conclusions are based on facts, weighed for significance by the expert and leading to his or her opinion. In civil cases an expert’s duty is to provide written reports, and giving evidence is to help the courts. This duty overrides any obligation to the party who has engaged him or her. Two expert witnesses may well arrive at different opinions, leaving room for lawyers to argue and judges and juries to form their own conclusions. You’re not a robot, so every time you sign your name, it’ll look different. That’s what makes handwriting examination so interesting.” —Emily Will, board-certified handwriting examiner Nonprofessionals might think that since most people know how to produce handwriting, pretty much anyone can examine it. They might assume that the expert compares such things as the size, slant and spacing of the letters and the connections between them. Indeed, examiners do that. But they also look beyond those features of writing for subtler signs of how the writing was made. The report also recommends cross-training with other forensic disciplines that involve pattern matching, such as fingerprint examination.

Most handwriting experts work to controlled procedures and their findings and statements are peer reviewed by a second expert within their organisation. Even courts that will accept a handwriting analyst as an expert witness may differ as to the nature and extent of testimony that is permissible from the expert in court. For instance, several cases in various jurisdictions have held that the expert may testify as to the similarities and differences between two handwriting samples, but may not state an ultimate conclusion as to the author’s identity, even if the expert feels confident he or she can make such as conclusion.
