Depp resigned at Warner Bros.' request after having filmed one scene as Grindelwald. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he will still be paid his full salary, however, to fulfill the terms of his contract. In February 2022, producer David Heyman revealed that work had yet to begin on the script for the fourth movie (via ScreenRant).

Jude Law also stars as a younger Albus Dumbledore, who was played by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon in the Harry Potter movies. Law's version is a professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore had a lot riding on it after the relatively lukewarm reception given to The Crimes of Grindelwald. The Secrets of Dumbledore finally landed in cinemas on April 8 in the UK and a week later in the US. It was received (slightly) better by critics with 47% on Rotten Tomatoes and the audience rating ended up higher (84%) than even the first Fantastic Beasts movie. That 19-year period also covers the birth of Voldemort and the actions surrounding the creation of his first Horcruxes.

So if we hope to defeat him, then our best hope... is to confuse him. The future is less certain for Ezra Miller's Credence Barebone. It was confirmed in the third movie that he is a Dumbledore, although he's actually Aberforth's (Richard Coyle) son and not Albus's brother. That means nearly three and a half years will have passed since the second film, Crimes of Grindelwald.

Mikkelsen replaces Johnny Depp, who was asked by Warner Bros. to step down after he lost a libel lawsuit. He had sued British tabloid The Sun for calling him a "wife beater," in the contentious fallout after his divorce from Amber Heard.Fantastic Beasts 3 could build on this and show that Grindelwald has amassed quite a lot of power in five to six years and has stoked fears to the point of WWII. Maybe he's behind the rise of Hitler and the Nazis. Meanwhile, we may see Newt and his friends searching the world for the blood pact so that Dumbledore is released from it and can eventually duel Grindelwald. All that being said, the future of the Fantastic Beasts series is still unclear, but a fourth movie hasn't totally been ruled out yet. There's every chance the new bosses at Warner Bros Discovery will choose to continue a known property, despite the box-office drops. Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) knows the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) is moving to seize control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald's growing legion of followers. But with the stakes so high, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines? Will we see the next two movies in the series as originally planned? Your guess is as good as ours, but as of September 2022, there has been no definitive word about the future of the series. We don't yet have a confirmed release date for Fantastic Beasts 4 or Fantastic Beasts 5, so we can only speculate. Mikkelsen knows a little something about making a character his own, following another actor. After all, it's not easy playing Hannibal after Anthony Hopkins. Of course, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore's soft box-office performance doesn't guarantee that this is the end of the series.The Crimes of Grindelwald ended with the dark wizard using the fear of a world war to gather more followers to his cause. Two of those followers are Queen and Credence (for different reasons). Added to all this is that one of Newt's Niffler friends stole the blood pact between Dumbledore and Grindelwald. Behind the camera, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them director David Yates (who also helmed the last four Harry Potter movies) signed on to direct all of the movies in the series. The first film was set in 1926 in New York, while the second film took place in 1927, mostly in Paris. If Fantastic Beasts 3 does take place in 1939, that's quite a time jump. But the franchise does need to get to 1945, which is the year of Grindelwald and Dumbledore's infamous duel. As we mentioned before, perhaps Warner Bros was protecting itself against this with the way The Secrets of Dumbledore plays out. By the end of the threequel, Grindelwald has been exposed (again), Queenie and Jacob get married and Newt reunites with Tina Goldstein. Katherine Waterston's Tina Goldstein had a major role in the first two movies, but was relegated to a small cameo in The Secrets of Dumbledore. Tina is now the head of the American Auror office which is keeping her "very busy".
