About this deal

Yamazaki. Hakushu. Hibiki. When a Westerner thinks of Japanese whisky, they think of names under the House of Suntory. Which makes sense, of course — Shinjiro Torii’s company, founded in 1923, is Japan’s first and most popular whisky maker. But it wasn’t always that way. Hakushu® Single Malt Japanese Whisky | The House of Suntory

On the nose, the whisky offers notes of sage, ripe green apple, and hints of ripe pineapple. The palate brings a ‘complex smoky flavour’ with layers of herbal, grapefruit and acacia honey notes, and a smoky finish with undernotes of green citrus. Hakushu 18 Year Old Peated Malt offers a ‘new angle to the world of peated malt’ Those flavours then build to a pleasantly woody and natural finish, with characteristic sandalwood, dried coconut and clove. A surprisingly sharp sweetness rounds things off: it reminds me of konpeitō, Japanese sugar candies. The House of Suntory is also inviting fans to join its new global membership programme. Members can find out about new releases, receive priority consideration for invitations to consumer experiences, learn news from the distilleries, gain early access to content and more. Meanwhile, the new Hakushu 18 Year Old Peated Malt is comprised of malt whiskies all aged for a minimum of 18 years. The new expression is said to offer a ‘new angle to the world of peated whisky’. Founded in 1973 by Keizo Saji, Suntory founder's son, Hakushu Distillery is located at the foot of Mount Kaikomagatake the heart of a lush preserved forest. The bottle design for Yamazaki 12 pays tribute to its production facility, which is the oldest malt distillery in Japan. The illustration features the distillery in deep copper tones from a low angle, looking up. In February 1899, Shinjiro Torii — the father of Japanese Whisky — opened a general store in Osaka, Japan, that traded in imported wines. Within a decade, Torii began producing his own sweet grape wine called Akadama Port Wine, which became wildly popular throughout the country. Following World War I, Torri — fascinated by whisky his entire life — decided to expand his business and began constructing the Yamazaki Distillery, Japan's first-ever whiskey distillery. Hakushu 18YO Peated Malt Anniversary Edition - House of Suntory Hakushu 18YO Peated Malt Anniversary Edition - House of Suntory

The resulting liquid offers notes of dark cherry and ripe peach on the nose, with hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. The palate is ‘subtly spiced’ with Japanese incense and a long and lingering finish, accentuated with clove, sandalwood, and hints of dried coconut. On the nose, ripe green apple, sage and licorice abound. It’s bright and ever-so-slightly spicy. It’s undoubtedly smoky, but in a comparatively subtle way: it’s not a massive smoke bomb, nor does it hide the peat away. It actually reminds me a bit of tarte flambée, thanks to its funky, meaty and sweet notes. Blending is at the heart of everything we do at the House of Suntory, and we hold each of our whiskies to the highest standards throughout the process… I am proud to share the release of Hakushu 18 Year Old Peated Malt with the world,” Fukuyo-san relates. To celebrate its 100th anniversary, the House of Suntory has unveiled several limited-edition whiskies that highlight the unique Japanese craftsmanship at Suntory’s most prestigious whisky distilleries. Rare, refined and thought-provoking, these are some truly special drops. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. It’s exclusively aged in mizunara, also known as Japanese oak. One of the rarest and most expensive types of oak in the world, mizunara poses both challenges and rewards for whisky makers. It has a much higher moisture content yet is more porous than other types of oak. It doesn’t grow straight and takes an exceptionally long time to mature. It also imparts overly intense woody flavours in the early stages of maturation. The expressions are available from select retailers including Harrods, The Whisky Exchange and The Whisky Shop. The first of these special releases is Yamazaki 18 Year Old Mizunara, a potently Japanese expression from Japan’s oldest whisky distillery. Indeed, it’s this century-long story of overcoming adversity, championing innovation and centring craftsmanship that defines Japanese whisky, particularly the House of Suntory. Suntory’s distilleries, while all different in their approaches to whisky, are all defined by their respect for and pursuit of monozukuri – Japanese craftsmanship – and their meticulous approach to distilling, aging and blending fine whiskies.
