The design is filled with various subtle ambient effects, like birds and crickets chirping in the distance, generating a convincingly immersive soundfield. Again, possibly because it is a sequel and because the audience has been trying to guess who it/they are for the entire run-time, using the film’s own rules it now handily dispenses from time to time, but this felt to be the only hackneyed element of the whole film. Wes Craven's Screamis a well constructed and cleverly entertaining feature that revitalized the slasher movie, as well as the career of the legendary director.

He knowingly exposes many of the flaws in a worn-out plot structure as well as admiration for some its finer features, namely the mystery and suspense. Black levels are deeply profound and rich, giving the image some appreciable depth, while shadow details remain plainly visible and never obscured by the darker portions of the picture. The franchise tires were soon deflated, the cash cow was milked dry, but now there’s another “Scream,” which is titled “Scream,” because that’s what stud . A robust, palpable low-end meets every punch, thrust, gunshot and crash with plenty of weight and force. Aside from a few exceptions, the genre seemed to limp along in a daze of formulaic rubbish, and audiences (myself included) were in need of something new. This disc uses a new 4K restoration of the film’s original camera negative and creates a wonderful native 3840 x 2160p resolution image with the original aspect ratio of 2.

Whilst only maybe film nerds knew the rules of a horror movie when the first Scream came out, a year later when this sequel hit cinemas, everyone knew the rules of being a ‘sequel’… bigger, more excessive and just worse. Whites dazzle with newfound brilliance and blacks delight with extraordinarily deep and pure stability. Colors, including the infamous "corn syrup blood, just like they used in the prom scene of Carrie", are often beautifully robust and extremely well saturated. But then we’re back with the characters from the first film and we’re instantly reminded that for all those clever genre deconstructions, the first film was built upon superb characters – Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott has moved on, she’s at college and is nonchalantly able to deal with trolls who are content with harassing her over her past. The only new extra is only 8 minutes and doesn’t amount to much more than an EPK for the new Scream. Sure, on first glance it may not appear quite as sharp as the previous release but after no more than a few seconds of watching, it becomes clear this previous version just looked horribly over processed – look at the same shot at 19 min 59 secs: while Rose McGowan’s white boots at first appear to be more clearly delineated, the ribbing on her yellow top is completely invisible on the 2011 disc, a great example of how at first over-sharpening appears to have more detail but the opposite is actually the case. But almost immediately, 25 secs in, we get a great example of the disc’s overall image quality: the fine detail on Barrymore’s wool sweater pattern is razor sharp, the grain fields over her shoulders are clear and quite thick but looks even and organic and the colour palette employed looks very naturalistic.Channelling Hitchcock more than ever, each of these are beautifully constructed, tension-filled and eschewing so many of the usual idiotic cliches of so many of its brethren – here people do the right thing, make sensible decisions and still end up on the end of a bloody knife, all of which just amps up that tension even further. The musical score also spreads across the entire soundstage and lightly bleeds into the rears with great ease. The default English lossless track is the same as found on the previous release and unlike the picture was a very solid and adept soundtrack.
