About this deal

It is difficult to gain an accurate picture of what life is like for dairy cows – likely we’d hear a different story from small farmers, large-scale industrial farmers and animal rights activists. Here we outline some of the aspects of a dairy cow’s life, some of which also apply to sheep and goats, to explain why we marked butter companies down under the Animal Rights category for sale of dairy. Separation of calf from mother Acorn only uses organic milk so was not marked down under the Factory Farming category. Other organic butters, marked [O] on the table ( Waitrose, Marks & Spencer, Morrisons, Asda), were marked down under Factory Farming, due to other activities in their company group. Dairy company Arla however acquired a license to supply certain dairy products under the Yeo Valley brand, so when you buy Yeo Valley products it's possible you might actually be buying from Arla. Carbon management and reporting In 2023 Utterly Butterly’s parent company, Saputo Inc, scored Ethical Consumer’s worst rating for its use of uncertified palm oil. In 2022 Saputo-owned Dairy Crest received an enormous fine for its unacceptable environmental performance, and in 2021 Saputo was further criticised for its links to deforestation in Brazil caused by soya farming.

I also think that the buttermilk in Utterly Butterly may help the cake with the lightness and texture, so I am now converted. I will be using Utterly Butterly in all my baking from now on. I love the fact that the fat is greatly reduced (which doesn't necessarily mean you can have twice as much Paul!!), so now don't feel as guilty eating everything I bake! Our 120-strong consumer panel munched their way through 600 pieces of bread to blind taste test ten different dairy spreads. Each spread was rated each on its taste, appearance, texture and aroma. Nowadays, some newer margarines and spreads are low in saturated fat, high in unsaturated fat, and free of trans fats altogether. Margarine goes bad sooner or later, depending on its ingredients. In most cases, the fat spread will either go rancid (similarly to oils), or its overall quality won’t be acceptable to eat anymore. That might mean separation, waxiness, hardening, or any other texture change. Margarine has a shelf life of a couple of months and typically keeps for at least 1 to 2 months beyond the printed date without noticeable changes in quality. I suggest tossing yours if it’s passed that two months mark, just to be safe. The surplus butter was known as the EU Butter Mountains, although sadly it wasn’t ever turned into literal mountains you could slide down. Instead, it was sold off cheaply in poor countries (known as “dumping”) and while this meant they got cheap butter for a while, it also put local farmers out of business. And, as many poor countries are very dependent on agriculture and farmers are often the poorest of the poor, the practice was brutally criticised by Oxfam and others. Thoughts? I know my tTg iGa was elevated. But is it worth doing the biopsy? Are there other things that can cause this? We found no public record criticisms of Utterly Butterly relating to Nuclear, Fossil Fuels, Animal Welfare, Political Donations or Armaments, so it scores well for these criteria.

NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and Ulster Bank, which are all part of the NatWest Group, will now shut at least 172 of their bank branches in 2023 and 2024. However, many cows have limited, or no, access to grazing outdoors. In 2018, an estimated 23% of UK and Ireland farms kept some or all cows inside for the whole year. Following last week's Food & Drink programme on TV (Michel Roux Jnr and Mary Berry) where they taste tested 2 Victoria Sponge Cakes, one made using butter, and one made using margarine. I decided to do the same (partly because I was being cynical and didn't quite believe that butter could be outsmarted by margarine, and partly because I needed a good excuse to make another VSC so soon after making one for Valentine's Day last week!). Tiana and Mouse’s Favourite spreads are both vegan and sourced from companies that don’t appear to use any palm oil. (See the table above.)We've pitted popular dairy spreads, including Flora, Clover and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter, against own-brand products from supermarkets such as Tesco, Sainsbury's, Lidl and Asda. Of the more widely available vegan spreads, we would recommend Flora although it scored lower than Vitalite or Pure. In particular it was much better on palm oil. By law, margarine can't be labelled 'low fat'. Many of the products sold alongside butter and margarine are low-fat spreads. These can contain up to half the fat of butter or margarine. Large producers balance the line between trying to get a cow to produce as much as possible while not overworking them so that they become diseased or otherwise unhealthy.

Margarine tends to contain unsaturated fat, which is generally better for us than the saturated fat found in butter. Saturated fats are usually solid at room temperature, while unsaturated ones are mainly liquid. The following offer both vegan and non-vegan spreads: Asda, Co-op, Flora ( Upfield/KKR), Stork ( Upfield/KKR), M&S and Tesco. Is there palm oil in my vegan spread or margarine? To find out which was best, and to learn which you shouldn't waste your money on, head straight to our dairy spreads review. On that note, I have called my nurse practitioner office twice since my lab work (3 weeks ago) and both times, they’ve told me she hasn’t gotten around to viewing them, yet. Both have the same amount of calories. Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams for margarine. Margarine typically comes with a shelf life of a couple of months and keeps for at least a couple of weeks past the printed date. Opening the container or tub doesn’t really affect the shelf life, and it should still retain quality at least until the printed date, and likely beyond. Finally, as you might imagine, storing the fat spread properly helps it retain quality for longer. Let’s talk about that. Does Margarine Need to Be Refrigerated?
